Champagne is a metallic that conducts itself as a neutral. The finish lies close to the skin, so the lambskin keeps its suppleness and its fall, and the surface reads as unpolished gold until the light meets it directly. Then the facets separate and the whole of the quilting becomes visible at once.
A metallic finish forgives nothing, which is why this shade is worked entirely by hand. Panels are cut individually and matched for the direction of their lustre before they are set into the house geometry, so the reflection travels without interruption from one facet to the next. The padding is built from behind and the face of the leather left free of visible seaming.
The hardware comes from Italy. It is cast in solid brass, finished by hand and plated there in 18-karat gold, set a half tone warmer than the leather so the monogram lock reads as punctuation rather than as a match. Inside, chocolate suede lines the bag throughout. This is one of the seven interiors chosen against the exterior rather than with it: a warm brown under a pale gold, so the bag holds something the outside does not announce.
